Dispersion

Dispersion is symbolically portrayed as a demon called Choronzon whose number is 333. Choronzon lives in the Abyss, the place in Qabalah between the world of pure Being and the lesser, more illusory worlds. Of Choronzon, Aleister Crowley has written thus:

"The name of the Dweller in the Abyss is Choronzon, but he is not really an individual. The Abyss is empty of being; it is filled with all possible forms, each equally inane, each therefore evil in the only true sense of that word - that is, meaningless but malignant, insofar as it craves to become real. These forms swirl senselessly into haphazard heaps like dust devils, and each chance aggregation asserts itself to be an individual, and shrieks, "I am I!" though aware all the time that its elements have no true bond; so that the slightest disturbance dissipates the delusion just as a horseman, meeting a dust devil, brings it in showers of sand to the earth."

This is a Western way of saying the same thing that Buddhists say: that the cause of all suffering and evil is an ignorant kind of consciousness that actively mistakes things existing impermanently/interdependently for existing as independent individuals.

In the state of consciousness above the Abyss, there is no dispersion. Everything is simple and pure. But below the Abyss, in ordinary consciousness, we are bombarded by falsehoods insisting that they are real, dispersing our attention and thus depriving us of the supreme power that comes with singlemindedness. As Grant Morrison has written, Choronzon's workings are most strongly felt during an amphetamine comedown, when stupid thoughts pop rapidly and rudely into the mind and it is difficult to focus on anything at all.

Magick, meditation, martial arts, The Way of the Samurai and all other systems of ascension aim at singlemindedness, that is, at conquering Choronzon. Mushin and zanshin are terms that describe that state where there is nothing on your mind, nothing distracting you, so you are fully present as you do what you do. To translate that into contemporary American, you are "in the zone", "on" or "in flow". In this state you can accomplish anything. The past and the future do not exist, you are just there. As the teachers of Zen say, "When you sit, just sit. When you walk, just walk."

Choronzon is particularly mighty in this Information Age. If you were a hunter-gatherer, you would only have to think about your next meal, your shelter, maybe some social relations. But now, we find our minds racing from thoughts of your friend's website to Christina Aguilera to that DVD you have to return to remembering how cool Bananaman was. Our attention is dispersed like crazy and we lose our ability to concentrate and be present in the moment.

Any time you leave anything unfinished, you are feeding Choronzon. If you, say, get an e-mail you have to reply to and then forget about it, there will still be some little part of your brain committed to doing that. You've made a decision to do something and you haven't taken care of that committment - now it has a piece of you psychologically. This creates those vague feelings of stress and worry. "Maybe there's something else I need to be doing?" "And maybe it's more important than what I'm doing now."

Homework

Write out everything you "should" be doing. Take a few minutes and write whatever comes to mind. It doesn't matter how trivial it is; your subconscious doesn't file things by importance and a trivial unfinished task will create dispersion as surely as a big one will. Get it all out of your head and onto the page. If anything else comes to your mind later, write that down too. This isn't making a to-do list; it's clearing your mind of all the vague committments that are tying up your libido.
For each of these things, you can decide, "Fuck it. I don't need to do that." Cool, now you don't have to worry about it. Or you might decide you are going to do that. If so, write a reminder about it and post the reminder somewhere you'll see it when you need to take action. So if you need to make a phonecall, stick a post-it by your phone. Cool, now you don't have to worry about it.

The point of all this is simply to get your life organized. When you do this, you'll no longer need to worry that you should be doing something else and you'll be able to really, fully do whatever it is that you're doing.
