Talk:Ego

Encrusted habits (karma) forming a thing called a "personality". Deconstruxion. Dice.
"Who am I?" That is, I think, perhaps the most interesting of the big philosophical riddles.
We are not our bodies, because an automaton without consciousness would not be a person in the way that we mean.
If we are our mental lives, then there is nothing consistent about us, because impressions pass fleetingly across the mind's eye.
Ego-death means realizing our basic inseperability from everything else. This is not merely realizing the Truth, because the ego does not exist in reality, it is only a concept. Do you think yourself seperate from your environment? Do you think there is an internal self perceiving and acting on an external universe? That notion is an absolute nonsense. Not only have we never experienced a 'self', only impressions of objects in consciousness, but it is impossible to describe or think of anything in any sort of depth without taking its environment. Ultimately, you are everything, the universe itself.
Our conscious mind is not in control of our actions. We are by and large unaware of the motivations of our actions.
You cannot think directly about your self, because thinking about something makes it an object of consciousness, not consiousness itself. Trying to think about your self is like trying to punch your own fist.
