Alexander Shulgin
From The Maze Where Realities Converge - the psychedelic encyclopedia of reality from The Ultimate Comment
Alexander Shulgin, known as Sasha to his fans, is a psychedelic pioneer and chemist. He has synthesised over 200 new drugs with psychoactive properties, and, with his wife Ann, has written about these in his books, PIHKAL (Phenethylamines I have known and loved) and TIHKAL (Tryptamines I have known and loved).
Dr. Shulgin was a chemistry student when he had his first experience with mescaline. This experience inspired him to tinker with the chemical structure of mescaline, 3,4,5-tri-methoxy-phenethylamine, removing the methoxy groups, adding more methoxy groups, displacing the groups, lengthening the chain, shortening the chain etc. This is the work documented in PIHKAL.
Dr. Shulgin is perhaps best known for publishing the first reports of the activity in man of MDMA, or ecstasy.
Dr Shulgin is now 80 years old. He continues with his work in chemistry and pharmacology.
